The Race called Metaverse: Epic Games vs Facebook.
The metaverse is the next big and important change in the world of the Internet. Several big tech companies are getting involved, but Epic Games and Facebook are the ones who are pushing it the hardest.
Both tech giants have their own ideas about the metaverse, and they are both in the race. Who is right about what to expect from them? Let’s find out.
Metaverse is a word that Neal Stephenson made up in 1992 and used in his book Snow Crash. But until a few years ago, it wasn’t a word that most people knew.
The gaming and tech industries took the idea seriously and started to work on it. Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic, saw a huge opportunity in it and became its biggest fan. He said that meta-verse is “a change in how Internet users interact with brands, intellectual property, and each other.”
He goes on to say, “It would be like an online playground where people could play multiplayer games like Epic’s “Fortnite” with friends one minute, watch a movie on Netflix the next, and then bring friends to test drive a new car that looks exactly the same in the real world as it does in the virtual world.”
His meta-verse is based on the idea that there are no closed gardens, closed systems, barriers, or separate systems. Tech giants like Google, Facebook, Twitter, and games will only have one account that lets the user go anywhere in the metaverse.
On the other hand, Facebook wants AR-enabled glasses to connect all social networks together into a “meta-verse.” When the real world and the virtual world are brought together, people will be able to meet with their avatars in the real world.
Mark Zuckerberg, on the other hand, wants a closed metaverse that is run by its engineers and admins. Zuckerberg’s idea for the metaverse is that you will need a Facebook account to use apps and the metaverse.
Bloomberg also says what it thinks about Facebook’s metaverse: “Advanced semiconductors and software tools are the two most important things companies need to take advantage of the opportunities that could come from a metaverse. Facebook is weak in both areas.”
Epic Games and Facebook are both working on the idea of the meta-verse right now, but Facebook’s narrow view of the world would probably make it fail.
