Google Play’s policy has changed in a big way. Now, developers can add tokenized digital assets, such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs), to their platform apps and games. To make sure everything is clear, developers must say in the Play Console that their apps use blockchain technology.
In a recent blog post, Google Play’s Group Product Manager, Joseph Mills, said that this change in policy will allow partners to rethink traditional games by adding user-owned content and exclusive NFT rewards to keep users coming back.
Reddit, a well-known platform whose Avatar NFTs have been very successful, worked with Google to make this new rule. Matt Williamson, Reddit’s senior engineering manager, said that the new rules are meant to level the playing field and encourage users to trust each other and use blockchain technology responsibly.
Mills emphasized how important it is for users to trust each other and warned against promoting or exaggerating the money that could be made by playing games or trading tokenized assets. This is in line with Google Play’s policy on Gambling, Games, and Contests for Real Money. So, apps that don’t meet the requirements for gambling-related content aren’t allowed to promote the purchase of in-game items, like “loot boxes,” for a chance to win NFTs.
Google’s approach to blockchain-based apps used to be unclear, which is why games like “Bitcoin Blast” were unfairly taken off the Play Store in 2021. In 2018, the platform banned applications that mined cryptocurrency. This rule has not changed with the new rules.
Google’s attitude toward Web3 technologies has changed in a way that is noticeable. In 2022, the company gave permission for a data storage app called ArDrive Mobile to be added to the Google Play Store. In some places, you can also get Axie Infinity: Origins on Google Play. In April 2023, Google Cloud will also start a project to help Web3 developers speed up their new businesses.
A Google Play representative said that the first testing of these new features will start in late summer, when they will work with a small group of developers. Later this year, the new policy will be fully put into place.
